Career Guidance Committee
The Career Guidance committee provides a focus for primary and secondary schools. Last session, 2008 - 09, a number of successful initiatives were held,details below:
• Worked closely with SD, YP & AP Committees • Active participation in COGeS (In line with key objectives) • Careers Support and evaluation of Oilsim Challenge – 1st Sep 09 at RGU • Provide guides and support at “energise your future” – (OE09 11th Sep 09 - 350 pupils) • “How energy works books?” – School distribution during OE09 • Evaluate “energy4me” kits in relation to Scottish Curriculum • Pilot “Energy4me” kits and School presentations with YP support • Secure sponsorship for SPE “Oil & Natural gas” books
Events planned for the 2009 - 10 session are as follows:
• Pupils CV & portfolio development pilot project support (CTC) • School careers events to promote careers in the oil and gas industry • Evaluate SPE ‘Magic Suitcase’ and link to curriculum (engage children’s interest in science and engineering) • Providing financial and volunteer support to TechFest-Setpoint (TBC) • Sponsoring Maths In The Pipeline (TBC) • Sponsoring Young Enterprise Grampian (TBC)
The focus this year will be rather than one off events, to try and embed initiatives into the school curriculum.
The committee is involved in supporting the COGeS initiative which stands for careers oil and gas sector, with the e representing energy. Membership of the group consists of ACC & AC, OPITO, Careers Scotland, ACSEF, EI, SPE, Subsea UK & WSCA. The key objectives of COGeS are as follows:
• “Industry Ready” young people with skills for learning, life & work. • “Industry aware educators (Teachers, guidance teachers & career advisors)” through quality opportunities for their CPD. • “Educationally aware” industry. • Linking young people to real career opportunities. • Linking industry to potential trainees • Create a map/matrix of the Oil, Gas & Energy Industry Schools initiatives and calendar of events. • Create an exemplar model of collaboration and share best practice with other UK (And International regions)
